An amazing experience free swimming with the dolphins in their natural habitat. This is an unforgettable adventure and in the same weekend we explore a volcanic island and its dramatic past.

There is also an exciting new Open Water Swim race being held on the island for the first time. Great for open water swimmers, triathletes, and ironmen, on a sheltered race course with different distances to test yourself 2.5km, 5km, and 500m x 4 relay. Supporters are welcome to join too.

Trip Itinerary

Dolphin swimming and snorkeling

Friday (Jul 21)

  • Meet at Takeshiba pier at 9:30pm
  • Orientation/distribution of supplies
  • Get on the ferry at 10:15pm
  • Overnight ferry ride

Saturday (Jul 22)

  • Arrive in Miyakejima island around 5am
  • Bus ride to Lodge (15mins)
  • Check in (5mins)
  • Organize & check Dolphin swim gear / OWS race
  • Take a short nap
  • Breakfast at 7am (Bring your own)
  • Join the optional scuba diving, or snorkeling lesson, or OWS race
  • Have lunch (not provided) (If doing OWS race provided in race entry)
  • Dolphin swimming
  • Onsen at Fureaino-yu Hot Spring (If doing OWS race provided in race entry)
  • Dinner at 6:30pm

Sunday (Jul 23)

  • Breakfast at 7:30am
  • Pack-up
  • Join the walking/sightseeing trip around the island (8:30am-12:30pm), OWS race participants dolphin swim, or go snorkeling, or just relax and catch up on your sleep
  • Get on the ferry at 1:20pm
  • Ferry ride (we'll drink and party on the deck floor)
  • Arrive back in Tokyo around 8:30pm

Important Notes

Scuba diving
  • Itinerary may vary due to the weather, traffic conditions, and other unavoidable circumstances.
  • This trip will proceed rain or shine as it involves some complex logistics and preparation, and strict cancellation policies from suppliers (boat charters, captains, instructors, safety staff, and other equipment). There will be a 100% cancellation fee for cancellation made five (5) days before unless you find a replacement. There is also a late booking fee of 3,000 yen two (2) days before departure.
  • Scuba dive: You must have an advanced open water scuba license or have dived more than 20 times, and once in the last six months, to be able to join the scuba tour.
  • To join this trip you should have snorkeled at least three times before and able to clear water from your snorkel. You should be also confident at swimming in the ocean where you cannot touch the ground. If you have any questions and/or would like lessons please contact Jordan.
  • Snorkeling lesson is recommended, even if you have some experience snorkeling, as it covers open water snorkeling skills which will allow you to maximize your time in the water with the dolphins.
  • Wetsuit are mandatory.
  • Overnight ferry seat upgrade is possible, just let us know upon booking.
  • Lodge 2 ~ 3 people per room
  • You must check out of your room before 10am
  • Payment okay on the day for optional activities and rentals.
  • Vegetarians will be accommodated.
  • Booze/drinks available on the boat and on the island.
  • We will take care of your bags and other belongings and will bring it to the port for you on Sunday.
  • The open water swim is an event organized by NOWS Entries can be made through the Sports Entry website
  • Final details will be sent to the participants by email two days before the event.

Outdoor activities

Dolphin Swimming

  • Held in Mikurajima, the neighboring island. Tour duration is about 3~4hrs (30mins round-trip land transportation, 90mins round-trip boat ride, about 2hrs swimming with the dolphins).

Scuba Diving

  • One of the best diving spots in Japan. You'll see coral area on the westside and seaweed area on the east side of the island. Such sea setting is rare in the world.
  • Snorkeling:

    • Good spot just a short walk from the campsite.


    • See and visit Meganeiwa (Spectacles Rock), Ako Lava Flow Trail, Mt. Hyoutan, Tairo-ike lake, Nature Center, etc.
    • Onsen:

      • Fureaino-yu is a very nice and clean natural hot spring facility located on the coast of Ako, outdoor/indoor baths, gorgeous view of the Pacific ocean.
