Niijima Island Open Water Swim and Camping

Niijima Island's annual open water swim race is July 09. This is a scenic race on a beautiful island. Great for beginners to advanced open water swimmers, triathletes, and ironmen, on a sheltered racecourse with different distances to challenge yourself: 1.5km, 3km, and 4.5km.

Supporters are welcome to join too.

This trip features:

  • A scenic open water swim race, well organized and suitable for beginners.
  • Clear and clean ocean.
  • Beautiful sandy beaches.
  • Clean campsite with good facilities.
  • FREE outdoor Greek styled onsen with ocean view perfect for race recovery.
  • Flat quiet roads for those triathletes that want to fit in some extra bike or run training.
  • Supporters have good views of whole race course.
  • 2:30pm Sunday (July 10), Jet Boat departure to make the most out of your weekend.


  • Please sign up early as each race is limited to 100 people per race, and the return ferry gets booked out early.
  • The race registration deadline is June 8 (but likely to sellout).

  • We will organize some pre race training swims in Tokyo and Niijima Island.

Trip Itinerary

Friday (July 8)

  • Meet at Takeshiba pier at 9:30pm
  • Distribution of ferry tickets and camping supplies
  • Get on the ferry at 10:30pm (Seats upgrade available)
  • Overnight ferry ride

Saturday (July 9)

  • Arrive in Niijima island around 7:30am
  • Put all the bags/camping supplies in the service van
  • Walk/ service van transport to the race venue
  • Compete in the open water race / spend the day at the beach.
  • Get the bikes/drive to the campsite
  • Have fun setting up the tents
  • Dinner at 6:30pm
  • Bonfire drinking party
  • Stay overnight camping

Sunday (Jul 10)

  • Breakfast at 7:30am
  • Pack up the tents
  • Put all the bags/camping supplies in the service van
  • FREE TIME (9am~1:30pm)
  • Transport to the pier
  • Get on the Fast Ferry to Tokyo at 2:15pm
  • Jet Boat ride
  • Arrive back in Tokyo around 5:00pm

Important Notes

  • Itinerary may vary due to the weather, traffic conditions, and other unavoidable circumstances.
  • You MUST have your own insurance (health, social, company, etc.) to be able join.
  • Takeshiba pier is 10 minutes on foot from JR Hamamatsucho or Daimon station on the Oedo line and a minute from Takeshiba station on the Yurikamome line.
  • Ferry seats upgrade possible, just let us know upon booking.
  • Must be able to swim if participating in a race.
  • Races start times are minutes apart so you can only participate in one race.
  • Proper bike bag is required if you are bringing your own bicycle (the freight fee is 500yen with a bike bag, 1,500yen without a bike bag each way).
  • Maximum of 3 persons for shared rental tent.
  • There are restaurants and supermarkets on the island.
  • Vegetarians will be accommodated.
  • Bring enough cash for the whole trip (Outside of large cities ATMs are not easily accessible, if any.)
  • Final details will be sent to the participants by email two days before the event.
