Trip Itinerary

Surfing and free outdoor onsen on Niijima

Friday (Sep 18)

  • Meet at Takeshiba pier at 9:30pm
  • Distribution of ferry tickets and camping supplies
  • Get on the ferry at 10:30pm
  • Drink, party and sleep on the deck floor (Seat upgrade available)
  • Overnight ferry ride

Saturday (Sep 19)

  • Arrive in Niijima island around 7:30am
  • Put all the bags/camping supplies in the service van
  • Walk to the bike rental shop (15mins)
  • Get the bikes/ride to the campsite (10mins)
  • Have fun setting up the tents
  • FREE TIME (10am-5pm)
  • Dinner at 6:30pm
  • Bonfire drinking party
  • Stay overnight camping

Sunday (Sep 20)

  • Breakfast at 7:30am
  • FREE TIME (9am-5pm)

Important Notes

Snorkeling, cliff jumps and hiking on Kouzushima
  • Itinerary may vary due to the weather, traffic conditions, and other unavoidable circumstances.
  • You MUST have your own insurance (health, social, company, etc.) to be able join.
  • Ferry seat upgrade possible, just let us know upon booking.
  • Proper bike bag is required if you are bringing your own bicycle (1,280yen freight fee each way without a bike bag).
  • Maximum of 3 persons for shared rental tent.
  • Most of the roads in Niijima are paved and fairly flat for biking so don't worry if you think you are unfit.
  • Surfboard rental and surf lessons available. Just ask us on the day!
  • There are restaurants and supermarkets on the islands.
  • Vegetarians will be accommodated.
  • Lunch for Tuesday (Sep 22) available on the ferry.
  • Final details will be sent to the participants by email two days before the event.

Outdoor activities

Lots of outdoor, island, beach and onsen fun


  • Camping; Habushiura campsite; well maintained campsite, good facilities, Western/Japanese style toilet available, cold showers (hot coin showers are located at the beach bathrooms, onsens and also on the ferry).
  • Surfing; widely considered as No. 1 surfing spot in Japan.
  • Cycling; best way to explore the island is by bicycle.
  • Sightseeing; visit Niijima museum, the glass art center, the greek style park, etc..
  • Beach sports; play dodgeball, cricket, frisbee and volleyball on Habushiura beach (a white sand beach stretches for 7kms with waves suited for surfing competition and known to be one of the best spot in the world. The beach is chosen as "Top 100 Scenic Beauty of Tokyo.").
  • Onsen; go to Yunohama rotenburo (one of the best onsens in Japan, an outdoor mixed bath, wear your swimsuit, ocean view, different temperature pools, bring-your-own drinks OK! open 24-hours and its FREE!) or go to Mamashita onsen (a highly recommended sand onsen, reserve in advance, entrance 700yen!)


  • Snorkeling; at one of the beaches (bring your own snorkeling kit).
  • Beaches; play volleyball/frisbee or just relax/sleep.
  • Onsen; free outdoor onsen and foot bath (iron mineral) with ocean view.
  • Trekking; walk through the forest on our way to one of the beaches.


  • Bridge/platform jumping/diving; There are designated spots to do it along the Akazaki Promenade walking path. This is one of the highlights of the trip!
  • Snorkeling; A great spot right down the Akazaki Promenade walking path. One of the best snorkeling spots in Japan! Snokeling kit is not available for rental so bring your own.
  • Maehama beach; Relax, swim, sleep, play frisbee or volleyball on Maehama and Nagahama beach.
  • Hiking; A HIGHLY RECOMMENDED hike up to the summit of Mt. Tenjo with 360° breath-taking panoramic view. It will take around 2.5hrs up and down, another extra 2-3hrs if you do the loop.
  • Onsen; A nice outdoor onsen with ocean view, mixed, swimsuit required, separate indoor baths, open until 9pm, just an 8min walk from the campsite. Admission is 800yen.
