Trip Itinerary

White world of snow
  • Meet some people in the group at Tobu-Asakusa station (just outside the central gate) at 6:10am
  • Get on the 6:20am train bound for Tobu-Nikko (make sure you're on the right car)
  • Meet the rest of the group and the trek guides just outside Tobu-Nikko station at 8:30am
  • Get on the van
  • Drive up to the base of Unryu Keikoku Canyon (30mins)
  • Get the gear on (crampons, helmet, walking sticks, etc.)
  • Orientation and safety briefing
  • Start the snow trekking tour at 9:30am
  • Walk along the frozen canyon and take some photos of the magnificent frozen waterfalls and the surrounding gorgeous scenery
  • Picnic lunch around 1pm (bring your own)
  • Trek (or sled) back down to the van
  • Finish the snow trekking tour around 2:30pm
  • Drive back to Tobu-Nikko station (the van can drop you off at Toshogu shrine if you want to do some sightseeing)

Important notes

Frozen waterfalls
  • Itinerary may vary due to the weather, road condition, and other unavoidable circumstances.
  • The train (rapid) will depart from Asakusa station at exactly 6:20am. You will miss the entire trek if you come late and not make this train.
  • Experience not necessary but reasonable fitness required.
  • Unryu Keikoku is a canyon/river frozen in mid-winter located in an isolated area in Nikko, famous for its gorgeous and naturally formed ice-sculptures. It attracts hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts every year.
  • We willl walk along the frozen canyon, take some photos of the gorgeous scenery along the way like the 100m high ice-wall, 80m frozen waterfall, 10m ice-column and more.
  • You can also see ice-climbers scaling a 20m frozen waterfall, its really COOL!
  • The trek is time sensitive due to safety reasons so please understand that we will proceed on time with or without you.
  • Meeting spot is at Tobu-Nikko station not JR Nikko station.
  • If you like to do some sightseeing in and around Nikko area, the van can drop you off at Toshogu shrine on your way back to Tobu-Nikko station.
  • Rental of waterproof hiking boots (up to JPN size 28 only) are available but reservation is required.
  • Final details will be sent to the participants by email two days before the event.
